Select Stallion Auction Rules

u   GENERAL RULES:  The MAHA SELECT STALLION AUCTION AND FUTURITY are functions of the Midwest Appaloosa Horse Association. Any rules herewith can be changed, added to, or deleted at the discretion of this committee or the MAHA Board of Directors.

u PRIZE MONEY:  All proceeds from the sale of the stallion services, minus 25% (given to the MAHA Club for operational expenses) will be used as “prize money” for the MAHA SELECT STALLION FUTURITY.  Accumulated interest from money received through stallion service auction investments will be used to pay expenses.

u ELIGIBILITY:  Only “foals” resulting from the stallion fee purchased at the MAHA SELECT STALLION AUCTION and the stallion donator will be eligible for the WEANLING purse. However, ALL YEARLINGS AND 2-YEAR-OLDS sired by stallions whose fees sold on the Auction will be eligible for the Yearling Longe Line Class and Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure Futurity.

u STALLION OWNERS OBLIGATIONS:

  •     Stallion agreement contract must be signed

  •      Stallion owner will submit a photocopy of stallion papers

  •      Stallion owner agrees to file a stallion report with the Appaloosa Horse Club  

  •     Stallion owner may show one foal for each stallion service sold and paid in full. 
         The stallion owner will have the option of paying the balance of any unpaid fee of
          their stallion as of December 31st of year due to maintain eligibility in the
         auction.  The stallion owner will then have two eligible entries.

  •      Stallion owner will be responsible for nominating their mare on or before 
         January 1st  

  •    Stallion owner shall contact the Futurity Secretary to see if all money is paid on
        their stallion(s) before a Breeders Certificate is issued to the purchaser of the
        fee.  If money is still owed, the Breeders Certificate will not  be issued until the
        Futurity Secretary notifies stallion owner that the fee is paid in full or the Breeders
        Certificate can be sent  to the Futurity Secretary.

 u STARTING BID:  Only one service fee per stallion may be auctioned. Starting bid must be one half of the advertised fee or greater, with a minimum starting bid of $150.00.  If the advertised fee is Private Treaty, then the minimum starting bid is $150.00. If there is a chute fee, it must be declared on the contract.

u TERMS:  20% down, with the balance due in 8 equal payments due the 20th of each month.

u RETURN SERVICES:  Should a mare not conceive the first year of service, the mare will be given return service the second year.  In the case of death of the original mare or should she prove unbreedable, a substitute mare will be acceptable.  The stallion service fee from the Stallion Auction will remain in the year purchased but the foal will be moved to his year of eligibility.  If there are extenuating circumstances concerning a return privilege, the MAHA Select Stallion Committee will discuss the matter and make a ruling.

u   CREDIT:  In the event of the following: death of a stallion; stallion being unserviceable; stallion owner, manager or lessee refusing to honor contract for any reason; or should the stallion be moved to an undesirable location, credit will be given purchaser the following year for the same amount on another breeding fee through the Auction. However, if there is no attempt to breed in the appropriate year, then it becomes a forfeit unless there are extenuating circumstances and the Futurity Secretary is notified of the circumstance by August 1st of the breeding year following purchase. The MAHA Select Stallion Committee with discuss the matter and make a ruling.  There are no refunds. A party may sell his purchased stud fee by notifying the Futurity Secretary in writing. By doing so, that party forfeits his right into the Futurity and new party is then eligible. The fee must be paid in full before it can be transferred.

u UNSOLD SERVICES:  Services not sold in the Auction can be sold by the MAHA Select Stallion Committee to a bidder up to May 1st with all payments due paid to date of purchase.

 u UNPAID SERVICES:  If a previous year’s stallion fee purchase in not paid by the current year auction, any new purchases must be approved by the MAHA Board of Directors.  Any stallions fees not paid by December 31st of year due, the stallion owner has the right to pay the remaining balance and have two eligible entries. Any service fee purchased and not paid for in full, the purchaser will forfeit their right to participate in the Futurity, shall not receive a Breeders Certificate, and would be subject to penalties from the MAHA Board of Directors as they see fit.

Select Stallion Futurity Rules

u GENERAL RULES:  The Weanling Classification will be separated into two classes: Fillies and Colts.  A Yearling Longe Line class and a Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure class will be held for eligible foals.

u EXHIBITION RULES:  The MAHA SELECT STALLION FUTURITY will be held each year at such place as may be designated by the MAHA Board of Directors.  All classes will be judged by qualified card carrying judges.  All MAHA rules to prevail. All horses are subject to drug testing. Final placings will be determined by the total number of points awarded to each entry under the judges. First place being the entry with the lowest number of points.  The point system will be as follows:  1st place-one point, 2nd place-2 points, etc. through 20th place.  All entries above 20th place will receive 21 points. In case of a tie in final placings, the following will be used by comparing the highest placings of the tied entries.  If still tied, a tie breaker judge will be used.  BOTH OWNERS & EXHIBITORS MUST BE MEMBERS OF THE MAHA IN ORDER TO COLLECT ANY WINNINGS.

u ELIGIBILITY:  Only foals resulting from the stallion fee purchased at the MAHA SELECT STALLION AUCTION and the stallion donator will be eligible for the WEANLING purse.  However, ALL Yearlings and Two-Year-Olds resulting from the in-dam nomination AND those horses (non-nominated) sired by stallions whose fees sold on the Auction will be eligible for the Yearling Longe Line and Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure futurity.

u MARE NOMINATION:  Nomination of mare must be made on or before January 1st of the year the mare is to foal.  Even if your mare is known open, you still need to nominate your mare to hold your eligibility into the fore coming futurity.  If you are leasing a mare for your entry, you need to only complete the official mare nomination form naming your mare with your signature.  If a nominated entry is sold, its rights go with it.  Ownership changes must be recorded with the Futurity Secretary. No mare nomination fee is required.

u REGISTRATION PAPERS:  From the resulting foal, you must have a registration number from the Appaloosa Horse Club. It can be regular show papers, non-characteristic papers, or Certified Pedigree Option (blood tested) papers.  ALL PAPERS MUST BE SHOWN DAY OF FUTURITY. Should dishonesty in ownership, entry or registration be found on any entry, the entry will not be permitted to show or receive any award.

u PRIZE FUND:  The value of the prize fund will be 75% of the proceeds from the MAHA Select Stallion Auction. 52% of the Auction Money will be distributed to Weanlings, 5% to the Non-Pro/Youth which will distributed to all divisions (weanlings, yearlings, two-year-olds), 8% to the Yearling Longe Line, 10% to the Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure.

u PURSE DISTRIBUTION:

WEANLINGS:  52% of this purse will be split equally between Fillies and Colts.  The number of paying places will be   determine don the amount of sales from the Auction.  $15,999.00 & below will pay 5 places with one place added for  each $4,000.00 increment thereafter.

 NON-PRO/YOUTH:  A  Non-Pro or Youth National card is required the day of the Futurity.  5% of the Auction   Money will be distributed to all divisions.  30% will be distributed to each Weanling Class; 20% to the Yearling Longe   Line; 20% to the 2-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure class.  The number of Non-Pro/Youth exhibitors will determine   the number of paid places.  5 or fewer exhibitors will pay 3 places; 6 to 8 exhibitors will pay 4 places; 9 or more exhibitors   will pay 5 places.

 YEARLING LONGE LINE:  8% of the Auction Money plus percentage of entry fee money.  The total purse will determine the number of paying places.

  • Entry Fee Schedule for Yearlings—In-dam nominated eligible horses……$ 50.00 due July 15th

  • Non-nominated  eligible horses………$100.00 due July 15th

  • May enter day of show—BUT DOUBLE THE ABOVE ENTRY FEE

TWO-YEAR-OLD SNAFFLE BIT WESTERN PLEASURE:  10% of the Auction Money plus percentage of entry fee   money.    The total purse will determine the number of paying places.

  • Entry Fee Schedule for Yearlings—In-dam nominated eligible horses……$ 50.00 due June 15th

  • Non-nominated  eligible horses………$150.00 due June15th

  • May enter day of show—BUT DOUBLE THE ABOVE ENTRY FEE

u All futurity entries (weanlings, yearlings and two-year-olds) will pay an office charge the day of the show.  All prize money will be paid by checks payable to the owner of the horse and presented at the MAHA Awards and Select Stallion Auction Banquet.  If the winnings are to be paid to anyone other than the owner, a release form from the owner must be on file in our office no later than the day of the Futurity.

u TWO-YEAR-OLD SNAFFLE BIT WESTERN PLEASURE:  National Appaloosa Horse club rules to prevail.  Show management will provide a warm-up period.  During the warm-up period, horses must be ridden with same equipment required in event.

Futurity Rules

Prize Fund: The value of the prize fund will be 80% of the proceeds from the MAHA Select Stallion Auction.  55% of the Auction Money will be distributed to Weanlings; 10% to the Non-Pro/Youth which will be distributed to all divisions (weanlings, yearlings, & 2yr olds); 5% to the Yearling Longe Line; 10% to the 2 Yr Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure.

  • Entry Fee schedule for 2 Yr Olds – In-dam nominated eligible horses - $50.00 due June 15th  

  • Non-nominated eligible horses - $150.00 due June 15th  

  • May enter the day of the show - BUT DOUBLE THE ABOVE ENTRY FEES 

RULES ARE EFFECTIVE FOR THE YEAR 2002 FUTURITY. 

ALL futurity entries (weanlings, yearlings and 2 yr olds) will pay a $15.00 office charge the day of the show per entry.  All prize money will be paid by checks payable to the owner of the horse.  If the winnings are to be paid to anyone other than the owner, a release form from the owner must be on file with the futurity secretary, no later than the day of the Futurity.
